2023 Advanced Math Selection Process

For the 2023-2024 school year, the selection process was communicated by the Math Department as three sequential phases:

Phase 1

Students with a 98%tile or better on the QN CogAT were invited to Phase 2.  The QN refers to the quantitative and nonverbal components of the CogAT only, rather than all three components.

Phase 2

Students were evaluated based on 3 criteria - a secure exam, a work sample and a Renzuli Hartman scale.

  • Secure exam - tested 5th and 6th grade math content; students were supposed to show mastery of ALL 6th grade content to be chosen; this was given "double weight"

  • Work sample - Parents were invited to submit a project their child had created at home.  Parents were told it was "not mandatory."  Click here to learn more.

  • Renzuli Hartman scale - a well researched, teacher rating system that is known for identifying gifted students.

Phase 3

Committee review was to be completed for each student.  The committee would consist of the Coordinator for Mathematics, Math Specialists and a building administrator.

Additional Information

Additional information was provided on how the selection process was intended to work.  It was noted in this video (at minute 13 and 38) and through various math department presentations.
