Our Goals

Our immediate goal is to get the Superintendent, Dr. Passi, and the Board of Education to establish a committee focused on improving curriculum flexibility and accelerated placement transparency.  This committee would be comprised of parents, administrators and at least one Board member.  It's mission would be the following:

  1. Conduct a full review of the past selection processes and curriculum pathways

    • Acknowledge those who were mistakenly overlooked and work to find ways to minimize the impact on them (enrichment, test in options, new course offerings and explore alternative pathways for credit, inform counselors, change the narrative for interviews and letters of recommendations)

    • Make selected immediate, temporary modifications to the 2024 advanced math placement process to protect the 2024 cohort from flawed procedures

    • Develop a new selection process based on a review of the past successes and failures

  2. Develop a recommendations for flexible curriculum paths from elementary through high school

    • Provide more meaningful enrichment prior to the grade 5 secure exam

    • Begin advanced math in grade 5 (similar to before 2020).  Curriculum would be accelerated, not skipped, to renew equity in the process

    • Add additional classes to accommodate multiple levels of math students (similar to ELA model)

    • Add additional math and LEAPES sections to give all deserving students a chance

    • Allow students to "test in"

  3. Develop a more transparent placement process before and after selection is made

    • Publicize criteria and thresholds before the process begins and maintain them

    • Provide transparency for parents and students about the process and results

    • Monitor the implementation

About Manhasset Excellence

Manhasset Excellence aspires to ensure excellence in Manhasset Schools by promoting flexibility and transparency in advanced placement programs. We hope to educate the Manhasset community about the selection process for the 6th grade advanced math program in hopes that a better understanding about the policy and its implementation will allow parents and the administrators to work together to establish better placement processes for all subjects in the future. Information presented is estimated based on available information from the Board, administrators, the math department and parent feedback.
