For 6th Grade Parents
At th
e end of grade 5, students were selected into or out of advanced math, and unfortunately there is no ability to access the advanced math until 9th grade when students are invited to "double up".  These studens are also denied access to the AP Intensive Science Pathway.

  • Some students were denied based on performance, but have matured and are ready to access more demanding classes.

  • Some students were denied due to a flawed  2023 selection process that included a biased teacher rating process (particularly those who had Mrs. A and Dr. S in Munsey).

  • Many parents were not aware of the issues and were denied information so that they could not question the placement process or effectively appeal.  If your child took the secure exam and was denied, you are entitled to your child's secure exam score, a copy of their work sample, the teacher rating form and the total points earned on the placement rubric.  You can request this information from Lauren Tallarine at 516 267 7570 or Lauren_Tallarine@manhassetschools.org

These students need to be offered flexibility in the math and science placement to ensure that they can reach their academic potential.

About 25% of the 6th grade class is currently in advanced math and will be considered for the AP Intensive Science Pathway at year end. Selection has changed meaningfully from prior years and is problematic.

  • It includes selection based on a test of material the students have not been taught and it includes the flawed teacher ratings. Click here for information on the prior science selection process and for the proposed 2024 selection process.

  • Selection is not transparent. There are no pre-defined policies, criteria or thresholds. Successful appeals are not possible. Parents and students deserve clarity in the process BEFORE and AFTER selection is completed.

  • We need more AP Intensive Science class sections.  There is only one section taught in the secondary school so the group is cut in half.

We need more transparency, greater curriculum flexibility and more math and AP Intensive Pathway sections.

Vote Carefully

Two Board members, Pullano and Royce, will be up for reelection in May 2024. Find out where they stand on the issue.  Pullano has told parents that she is not receptive to reviewing the advanced placement programs or placement as of March 2024.  In addition, she publicly voted against Unlucky Student #1 when the placement process issues were first raised to the Board in September 2023. Royce was not present for that vote.

Sign the Petition

This petition urges the Manhasset School District Board and Administrators to revise the math and science programs to address concerns around flexibility in the curriculum and transparency of the selection process to reach our goals.
