Inaccurate Teacher Rating Process

The Renzulli-Hartman rating scale form used in Manhasset's math selection process is below. The teacher checks boxes for each question and the raw score is converted into rubric points of 1 through 4.

  • Scores of 58-60 are given a '4'

  • Scores of 55-57 are given a '3'

  • Scores of 50-54 are given a '2'

  • Scores of <50 are given a '1'

The scale form has no national norm.  A score means nothing unless compared to a norm created for the group. Manhasset did not create a proper norm. The form itself does not create a meaningful metric.  The process to collect the information does. Manhasset did not follow the procedures required to turn the data collected from this form into a meaningful, reliable Renzulli-Hartman rating.  There is nothing reliable or accurate about the ratings that Manhasset created from the scores on this form.

Notice the subjective nature of the questions.  Do these questions indicate whether a student will be successful in the advanced math program?

  • Is the student eager… to do math?

  • Does the student enjoy… math?

  • Is the student creative?

  • Can the student solve problems without manipulatives (e.g., counting blocks)?  (Are manipulatives even relevant in grade 5)

  • Does the student frequently solve math problems...?
