Students are supposed to be selected for advanced math based on the following process approved by the Board in 2020.

Phase 1:  Screened based on QN CogAT - 98%tile on required

Phase 2:  Evaluated on the three criteria:

  1. Content exam of 5th and 6th grade math content  (given 2x weight)

  2. Work sample

  3. Renzulli Hartman rating scale (a form of teacher input)

Phase 3:  Committee Review

Administrators claim that there are enough spots for all qualified students, but the process has conveniently limited the number of students to fit into one class in each elementary each year since the new policy went into place in 2021.

The practices used to evaluate students according to the policy reveals significant deviations from policy that need to be explained and addressed. Details on the 2023 selection process deviations are explained here. The modified process resulted in multiple issues and the result was to deny access to deserving students.
